Making the decision to become a writer has changed my life tremendously, and it can do the same for you. I had always wanted to write and began writing poetry and short stories while I was still in elementary school. As I got older I started writing longer stories and by the time I was in college I wanted to write for television and film.
My training in school had been so rigid that I had to take classes to get my creativity back. I had taken one creative writing class in high school, but even then the rules were very strict as to how many words each story could be and what topics were acceptable. The classes I started taking were through the college’s extension department or from private writing schools. I was able to let my imagination run wild, allowing me to write romantic comedy, situation comedy and other genres that I found to be of interest.
The problem was that I wanted to sell some of this writing and have a career as a writer. I lived in Los Angeles and made some contacts with people who could make sure my word was read. After being turned down regularly for several years I just stopped writing. Because I was not willing to persevere and look for other opportunities, I shut the door on a writing career. An agent suggested that I try writing non-fiction, but I remember telling him that I did not know enough about anything to be able to write about it.
It was twenty years before I started writing again. During that time I had become a teacher, and I taught hundreds of students how to write compositions that were persuasive, narrative or expository. I also became a real estate broker and appraiser, and wrote many detailed reports about residential real estate. But none of this writing was done for me or to help others to learn how to write. It was not until I found a mentor that I began to write again and now I write every day.
